Just been given this machine. It fires up okey but will not allow the hard drive to format . Gets to about 7% then sticks. The hard drive is a Hitachi Travelstar 120gb 5400 rpm sata, 8mb. I was wondering if I could fit a smaller Hitachi hard drive(?5 cost) to test to make sure the original one is ~~~~ed. I have a recovery disk for the computer and a genuine XP pro disc.

Any ideas of where to get a keyboard for it as the return key is missing?

Many Thanks

You can use any SATA drive, regardless of capacity.

Just download Ubuntu and run it from the disc, you can check the HD for consistency, if it checks out then download active kill disk and low level format it. Should work

Late reply but I have the recovery dics although XP pro will suit better due to the diag software which is going on it.
