There is a lot of talk about the Ford diesel trucks and the operation of the new 6.4L Power Stroke diesel engine. Fuel economy seems to be the only fault most people can find with the engine but there seems to be few people who know the real facts about the operation of the engine and the new exhaust after treatment system. Since the launch of the 2008 Ford Super Duty trucks there have been a few engine control software updates that are very important. We are all learning about the operating characteristics of these engines. Service technicians and all dealer personnel involved with these trucks along with the owners should take the time to read this information published by Ford Motor Company that we have gathered.

In addition to the Field Service Action (recall) 07S49 released early in 2007, there have been two Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that address several engine performance issues and enhanced the DPF regeneration operating characteristics including an instrument cluster update that informs the driver of regeneration status and malfunctions requiring engine shut down. The first TSB describes DPF regeneration and what the driver may notice while it is occurring. The second TSB describes several fixes included in a calibration update which also requires updating the Instrument Cluster software. This new software includes changes to the message center including regeneration status and warning messages further explained in detail the 2008 Diesel Brochure. Do keep in mind that after the writing of this article issues and changes may arise and subsequent calibration changes can affect regeneration characteristics and cluster warning messages. Ultimately, asking your local Ford dealer will provide the most up to date answers to your questions.
