the one in the link, installation will be a case of unscrewing a couple of screws, unattach old one, put new one in, do up screws

there should be a small hole near or on the disc tray into which you can insert a pin or something. that should open it. do that, pop a disc in, see if it works. you may be lucky and its just the light and eject button thats ~~~~ed but its perhaps more likely the whole drive is buggered

Shadyback and RedSpider, cheers guys. Ok ive already tried the pin thing. Disk tray comes out I've put cd in but no doesnt load or anything, basically disk doesnt spin.
As suggested if I go for the link sent by Shadyback and put in the new DW Drive is it that simple, about software etc?
Cheers again

How on earth are you going to know if that one is going to fit in your Laptop? You didnt even say your Laprop model number, lol.. The chassis might be wrong shape/size, the bezel might be wrong size, the connector might be wrong size and in wrong position.. It could also well be a whole number of screws to undo on your Laptop to replace the DVD drive.. If you've never taken a laptop apart before then may I suggest you be very careful, there could be many short cables and ribbon connectors that can be easilly damaged when pulling it apart... On some Laptops the DVD drive is a modular unit thats easilly slid out for the purpose of slotting in a floppy drive? Is there a slider button on the underside (like for the battery) that enables the drive to slide out?? You may just need to reseat it... Or, if you give your Laptop model then might be able to better advise..

Woww thanks alot guys for your kind help! Yes nibblitz just as expected I would not have thought it would be as easy as described! My laptop model is a "Sony Vaio VGN-CS16G" if you could give me more advise that would be great. I would rather fix it then go to dealers due to bad experience before...

Oh my, thats a rare one... I cant find much info on it, I think that its maybe not a mass produced nor a European Laptop?... Im afraid you might have to call Sony to get a part number for the drive, or take it out and get the part number from it... Theres probably a compatible part for it, maybe same drives that fit a range of Vaios, but what I just cant find out, sorry...
Might work out a lot simpler & cheaper to buy an external slim usb dvd drive like a LiteOn eTAU108

Can I use any other drive, a universial Sony drive for it to work? Took it too local repair shop, he's charging alot...any help would be appreciated........................ had similar prob this is how i sorted it. right problem sorted bought optiarc slimline dvd rom player model(ad 7540*a) from fleabay down loaded csel changer tool that corresponded with this unit, which allowed me to change it from master to slave, bought forty to fifty pin slimline cd rom ide attachment from maplins. this meant i could connect laptop dvd rom to my pc thus allowing me to change said unit to slave setting so would be recognised by toshiba laptop bios, hey presto job done. hope this may be of some help to any members who are in the same predicament.---------sorry about the double post hope u can make some sense of it.

Spondulick, firstly thanks for the help! Secondly as I am not as technically sharp as you relating to such matters, to confirm if you could post me links to sites what I need to buy?! That would be great, I think it shouldnt be too hard for me to install the stuff in. Also will these different models actually work to confirm model no: Sony Vaio VGN-CS16G. Its an Asian model hence getting any info has been hard! If already put drive model up anyways.
Thanks

Ok dude, ive emailed them they said it will fit! So im going to purchase this from ebay. Is it easy to fit in? Ive seen a few youtube vids where you just unscrew the bottom, pull it out and put new one in! Unfortunately mine looks abit complicated!???
Also whats this "bezel" business as they said they dont supply this, do I have to buy this seperately.
Cheers fella

right rob the bezel is the plastic bit at the end of the cd/dvd tray, they either clip on or there is a tiny screw holding in place, just had a look at the one i have in toshiba laptop it looks as if it clips on. ps i didn't need to replace bevel on this one, hopefully be the same with yours. If it fits in slot without bezel interfering leave as is. let me know how you get on....sorry rob did u say there is no bezel on the one you are buying if so hopefully the one off your old unit will be a straight fit.

Hey! My laptop is all dismantled! It took quite a while taken the screws out, there are sooo many! Looking at the old driver is just came out, which was easier then I though? Regarding the Bezal it is the red thing right? The part which comes out when the disk is ejected...it was attached to old drive with a screw which I deatched, hopefully this will fit on the new one that should arrive tomz. Then i just slot back in?
Cheers dude,

11th September, 2011, 07:50 PM
Hey dude, yes ive sorted it! Due to a stupid error, i am happy on one side and not in the other.
What happened was a got one screw stuck, and while trying hard to get it lose from the bottom chassis a small screw was on the table on the top side of the lid faced down on table, now my laptop lid is all scratched :(!
As its a fairly new lappy any advise on fixing?! Ive seen few lids on ebay but there second hand and dam expensive..cheers fella!

You forgot an important thing... Is dvd/cd rom recognized by bios? To know if you have a hardware error or software error... You should chek bios settings.
