PC keeps switching off !!

Hi All
My pc keeps switching itself off in 'normal mode' have seen it may be the fan but when i run it in safe mode it stays on , any ideas out there please , windows xp system , could be infected i dont know but need some advice on how to get it back to normal if poss please . Have tried system restore but keeps freezing !!!

Have you tried running an anti virus in safe mode

had a similar problem with a pc that kept freezing, tried cleaning the inside of the case removing any accumulated dust etc but in the end it came down to a failing power supply unit which once it was changed the pc worked as normal and which could account for yours switching itself of.

Does it not matter then that it runs for hours in safe mode ??? dont understand how ' power supply ' cuts in when in normal mode but runs when in safe , cheers

Have you tried running an anti virus in safe mode

the anti virus i have on wont run in safe mode , when i click on it nothing happens !!!

Try reinstalling windows first mate, if its running ok in safe mode would sometimes mean the power supply is ok but it all depends.

But....Normally as a user said above, when a pc is shutting down randomly it could well be the psu, I would first try a reinstall of windows to rule out anything to do with windows and drivers etc, after that if it does keep shutting down in normal mode then I would suspect the psu, its very difficult to tell though, try the reinstall of windows first and then we can move on from there, thats what I would do and Ive had loads of experience of many of these issues, its hard to narrow it down but you have to start somewhere.

if your afraid windows is doing it. Try installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu and see if every thing is alright..

I think it's not possible windows doing it self...install ubuntu...??? for who now how to use it no matter but for whom familiar to windows....it's difficult...must learn it again

(http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/members/262096-d21198071/)D21198071 is right. Installing and using ubuntu for someone inexperienced can be a pain in the butt so it is not recommended. What you could try though is dl ubuntu and use it as a live cd and see if same thing happens. But I still don't recommend it. What I DO recommend is download a win mini pe from somewhere. Practically it's a live installation of winxp that runs from a cd and has a dosen useful apps pre installed (like anti-virus, partition managers, etc.).

have you try clean install......don't forget back up all your data first...

It could be that a virus has replaced one of your device drivers or windows system files which when the virus has activated then it will cause your system to shut off but in safe mode it may not be intialising the device/driver that is being used in normal mode.

check that ya bios is not set to overclock put it on standard..see how that goes......

check your processor fan, faulty processor fan may cause the processor to overheat. hence will hang
