Its very tight inside the Wii, I cant think of any space free. The mod chip only just fitted. And as CK says, you dont need to if you want to modify it.

..@ ck-ok thanks for an answer....

"you can mod it without a drive" ... sorry not keeping up to date on modding ! reading more that's great "news"

"why put hdd inside the unit? " ... 1."Tidyness (all-in -one!)"

2.When sleeping over daughter still takes her dvd's with her, infrequently she will also take her H/D. Asked if there was no dvd drive & a H/D were fitted inside instead, would she use it....her answer was yes !

3. I'm doing No....... Women Logic Jokes :)

--------
@ bluebottle ,By Removing the dvd player completly from the unit will not there be enough space for a small H/D ?

icepick - you haven't said how old the Wii is or which system menu you are using? Obviously if its less than 4.3 then your going to need a useful DVD in it else you can't softmod it.

If it is 4.3 then you can use LetterBomb (http://hackmii.com/2011/08/letterbomb/) then you won't need a working DVD player you would just use an external HDD.

Didn't you read the post from ck-ok. A soft mod can be done without a dvd. Even if a game exploit was required for below 4.3 then surely you would just use nintendo online update to 4.3 then use letter bomb

Before you try and fit a usb powered hdd inside the wii have a look at this list USB Devices Compatibility List - WikiTemp (http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/USB_Devices_Compatibility_List) and make sure you get a compatible drive as not all usb only powered drive's work due to the wii not producing enough power from port 0 which if i remember correctly is still the only port you can load hdd from

even if he didn't want to update he could still use bannerbomb.

Hi again, the wii that I purchased arrived today, disc drive is faulty which I knew. Unit seems to work & running 4.2E & when connected to the net wants to upgrade !
Advice/options/recommendations of what you would do next? (relevant to softmodding)
Regards
