View Full Version : HERE, BMW IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM INFORMATION

I saw a thread earlier somebody asking which bmw belong to which immo version so i have decided to share the information i have about them.


EWS1 is used in BMW models 96 year
EWS2 immobilzier use bmw models from 1997 up to 1999 year.
From 1999 to 2004 year is EWS3.
CAS1 is used in BMW 7 series ? E65 from 2002 to 2005 year
CAS2 is used in BMW 1 seies, 3 series, 5 series, 6 series ? from 2005 till 2008 year
CAS3 is used in BMW 1,3,5,6 series, X5, X6 from 2008 year

So now you don't have to worry about the knowing which years uses what.

Don't have info on mini for now m8, but they are about the same thing, just replace the year model and u might be lucky, anyway i will let u know if I have more concrete information.

Its not the same mate. Mini used EWS3, EWS4 and CAS3. Ill give it a go for you ecufix but i might not be 100% correct as im no mini expert

Mini up to 2004 = EWS3
Mini 2005 - 2007 = EWS4
Mini 2008 onwards = CAS3

By the way EWS3 and EWS3.3 were also different which makes a difference if reading them. Any experts please correct me if im wrong

EWS immobox (10 Keys possible, the have fixed and rollingcode)
SE module (receives key signal from transponder ring, and sends key codes to EWS)
EWS allways powered.(Also when key out, or ignition off)
When you turn the key, then SE module sends(received) key codes to EWS and then EWS comes alive and EWS sends ISN number to
DDE/DME.
EWS stays allive for a short period (10-20 seconds) after ingnition is put off.
When key still inside barrel and people disconnect battary (or something else wrong with car)
We can aspect the most common problem with this system (rollingcode key wrong)
This problem can be solved with EWSeditor.(read ews eprom with a programmer and use EWSeditor to correct dump.
EWSeditor puts FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF on key rollingcode location.
Read eprom can be tricky there are different types and some erase when you try to read them.
You also can try buy new key(order this using VIN from EWS!)
EWS1 starter relay NOT inside/SE module under dash (work with ISN number inside DME/DDE)
EWS2 starter relay inside /SE module under dash (work with ISN number inside DME/DDE)
EWS3 starter relay inside and SE module inside (work with ISN number inside DME/DDE)
EWS3+ This = EWS3 and uses also rolling codes between DDE/DME and EWS

I first read DME/DDE with INPA (indentification) and when i see ISN number then I know
we have EWS system without rollingcodes between EWS and DDE.
Simple job to get car started and run with used parts.
EWS1,2,3 we can read ISN from DDE/DME
and program this ISN inside EWS.
This can be done with INPA and KKL interface.
Sometimes when everything's right(and no dtc's) and car still don't starts then coding is wrong.
When EWS coding is for automatic gearbox then starter not work.
Correct coding for manual gearbox with INPA or connect 2 starter wires (on EWS box)

EWS3+ the rollingcodes are burned inside DDE/DME (only new DME/DDE with same rolling codes work)
Most common problem is syncronisation rolling codes EWS-DDE is lost.
This problem can simply be solved also with INPA and KKL (you have to Sync rollingcodes EWS-DME)
When we try to use used parts EWS3+ and DDE/DME from different cars (then we have not the same rollingcodes)
Codes cannot be changed with INPA
And Codes we cannot read from DDE/DME
DDE/DME must be new or virginised. (haved done this myself)
There are 2 programs I know that can make DME virgin(maybe) the are SCP and BMW ID editor.
Many virgin dumps I see here on DK are the same as calculated with this programs.

Thanks mage ,very kind of you to share this info . I notice quite a few members , myself included , are very keen to learn about the right way to repair key related problems ,rather than just immo off .Thanks again .

I spyed communication between EWS2 and Key.
Can be done with normaal KKL interface.
9600.E.1 baud
We can see fixed and changingcode from key:)

sorry mate, ive had for my whife few years ago 320i automatic siemens M52 1994 obd protocol , so on board was ews 2 ( 1994 manufactured), played on it with 1.40

Right now I have my own toy in front of my house and its really an E60 520i ( 2200 cc siemens MS54) built 2003.09 , and have cas2 white, just cloned with Enigma, white CAS2, im not blind.

anyway no problem :D

X6 its a E71 model its a cas3 but updated u can make key just by OBD. impossible by Dump.

I CAN MAKE ALL E SERIES TILL 2011. BUT NO FOR THIS F01 F02 and R series
