Son downloaded a critical update on his win7 pc today, on reboot the pc boots to repair console, it will do nothing else! I've tried booting from repair disc(no luck) booting from win7 disc(no luck) cant boot to safe mode, only the repair console. Tried a sys restore from repair console, and it states successful, but again on reboot its back into repair console again, anyone offer any advice please, he needs this pc for his uni work.

Sound complicating I have no experience with what you described but it is common, found this link below if you have time give it a try might be just what your looking for.

Tried that bud, it wont boot from windows cd ! Thanx for the reply tho ;)

you have to perform clean install...hope it can be succesful

Best advice already given. Format & start again.
How many HDD's are there in the computer? Or was a single drive set up with a document partition?
Save what you can before formatting. Use a caddy if needed.

I done a clean install, windows updates can go ~~~~ themselves in future tho.

yeah....turn off automatic update if the problem from that...
use the original one....that's will guarantee everything go save

I have had simular problems recently, all down to the wonderful Rootkits.
Id suggest using:
Hiren's BootCD 14.1 - All in one Bootable CD ? www.hiren.info (http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd)
Hirens boot cd, goto windows, run gmer look for anything in red and run some of the other av's. Im not sure what else is on the disk from memory, but this is the one CD, I always keep to hand

I would have tried this first then hiren's:

I have had success with the above on 2 machines.

on clean install of windows
windows wants to update u about 60 things in 1 go
NO WINDOWS BAD WINDOWS
this ****s up ur comp if u get them all at once
what i do is select 15 - 20 of the same file types then download install reboot OK
