It depends very much on whether your motherboard allows boot via USB. Some of the later ones will allow this but only if the actual drive is structured in a specific way and does not require any extra driver for initial functionality. It usually involves a special partition on the drive which contains a bootloader. This partition is often quite small, maybe 100Mbytes or so and sort of simulates a floppy boot.

For XP and Win7, you would set things up in a similar fashion to the way its set up for a USB flash boot of those OS's.

you want to install on to external hardisk ? It's not common use. just solving your problem

You can but is much complicated for winxp.
Install from an usb Key is better but much complicated also for winXp also.

depending on the computer you are installing onto, make sure your peripherals are set. depending on what you are installing, if you have the right software and your Peripherals are set right.
