View Full Version : Too much information \ peeing on our own fireworks

Do you think we're peeing on our own fireworks by giving out too much information on these forums, im not talking about just cars but everything, its good to help people out when they're stuck but if the information & help wasn't available would we (the garages) have more work, Im not talking about our fellow mechanics but the tinkering sunday mechanics that have just got them selfs a cheap op-com, vag-com or what ever-com and need to know how to use it & what to change or check when they do see a fault code, when we've spent years, lots of money & had to do a lot of research. what do you lot think ??

I think you are correct, but i don't think it is the people you have taught to service there own cars that is the problem. It is ones that have spawn their own businesses from the information that has been published here. Two competing automotive forums have surfaced because of it, also high ranking members from DK are administrator's there aswell. So to protect the work of others a zero tolerence approach is required in my opinion.

So I am the first one who doesn't think so that we're cutting off our own legs and arms.
It all depend s on what "helping people out" means. If you're really qualified and have signed in for the daily task of professional prearation and formation all these tree shadow mecanics can't be shortening your buisiness. It takes more than just a cheap chinese interface and some smattering to fix modern cars.

Yes Liteace you are right..
But lets not forget that..
1, just having info supplied on the net is one thing, knowing how to put this into the "real world" is another.
2, the world is a big place with a lot of customers / faulty vehicles in it.. i am sure forum loose us a couple, but you have to remember, they also create faults through "playing"..

Only got an op-com, vag-com kwp2000+ usb-upa, zedbull, xprogm, galleto 1260, sbb (STILL dead), mvp, vag tacho, vcds, k-can1.4 and hot air station, reault decoder, tms374 decoder, reanult pin reaer, elm 327, elm 327 bluefish - ALL QUALITY MADE IN CHINA
Because of DIGITAL KAOS - THE WORLDS BEST WEBSITE.
Had it not been mor people like premiarD who understand about eeproms, mcu, milage IN-corrections etc etc, would never had done 1/2 the jobs we would have ~~~~ed off.
Like this morning, woman rings up about get this:-
peugot 206 petrol 1999 (306 more like) - keypad packed up **COUGH** years ago we would of crapped ourselves thinking about it, let alone having the car anywhere near the permeis let alone in the workshop.
was GAGGING for this one to turn up - 24C04 - marelli iaw - whatever it's dead, i'm tooled up ready for it.
It also goes the other way, where people ring up and say, got car a, and swapped part from car b and it did .... thanks to DK you can finish what there saying.
Yeah like the 4 times a year i acutally need help, never acutally get it - last one been that airbag reset file, can't remember the others off hand.

I not blaming THIS forum & I did say the tinkering sunday mechanics, im not talking about trade as we've, as far as I can remember always helped each other out. What Im saying is there are forums out there for absolutely everything. Say for example you have an Astra, you know very little about cars, the MIL light comes on so you go on an Astra forum (im sure there are many) you get told to get an op-com, where to plug in & how to read the codes, you post the codes on the forum, you get told its the EGR, you dont know what an EGR is so you google it and find out, then you get told how to remove it and clean or replace it, job done MIL goes out car runs like a dream its cost you 30 quid for op-com and thats it all for 30 quid and a little time, if it wasnt for the forum the car would have gone to the garage to be fixed. I do agree that yes there will be a lot of ~~~~ ups where "they've" started pressing buttons on the op-com that they should not have done

The reason we're on here in the first place is because the manufacturers/dealers make it too expensive for small operators to get the information we need legitimately and try to shut us out. So it would be ironic if we tried to do the same.

Liteace is correct, you need to rule it out and take a hard stance on it if you want to keep and maintain loyal knowledgeable members.
I can only speak from my experience, i came on here cause i wanted some advice on a problem i had.I am not in the automotive industry so i stumbled onto DK and asked questions.I didn't really get any help and i managed to solve the problem myself (that's right myself with no knowledge for my specific problem from anywhere else).Pretty soon i discovered a dark underlining theme that existed, constantly being lied too while trying to help those that are lieing!!!Now being new at the time i was not going to make a complaint to admin nor will i now, i've decided to deal with it my own way by exposing the scam artists for what they are, even if it gets me banned. We had lost the software section because of it in my opinion.Once you lose the member who are constantly helping others the site will become like all the rest.
Now i don't expect all of the above i mentioned earlier to be implemented, but unless something is done you will exhuast the currect crop of helpers and cease to contribute

That's quite difficult question. As we in our workshop mainly are working on electronics diagnostics, i don't mind people who are trying to play with their own cars. Of course, our job is becoming more difficult with this as needs to sort out what's been done on car and then start original fault finding, but our customers always are warned that TRUE story will save our time and his money. Sometimes that helps.
What i have noticed in last few years is that most of cars with all things messed up,wrong connected/broken/disconnected etc wires, connectors, sensors are coming from other garages and just few of them directly from customer.
I would invite some more people.
Last fun was when some technician asked me what that LAMBADA sensor is....:stoned:
I'm not saying that I'm smartest man on the world, but some people desperate needs forums like this.
I'm not surprised after technicians like that man our customers are trying to sort out their cars by themselves.

I dont know, what I do know is that it would have made ~~~~ all difference spaying it BUT you never know it might have started (nothing to do with the spray, as I said) due to some other fluke (not Fluke scopemeter) like the end of the can, his had or arm touching or even just brushing passed a connection or the engines \ pump loom multiplug or it even might have while winding it over pushed the last tiny bit of air out the pump and it fired up after a couple more spins, the div has then thought BINGO, fixed it and to this day is convinced that spaying the injector pipes on a diesel works !!
