Are you connected to your router with wireless? I suspect there may be lots of routers on the same wireless channel interfering with your connection.

That's got nothing to do with it fella. Your config is stored with VM regardless of outside interference.

I'd go with what cactikid said. Unplug everything for 12hrs and see if that helps.
Your IP will renew and be back to normal.

Forget 'speed testers' and do a timed download test of a large file from one of the virginmedia mirror sites (eg, Virgin Media Mirrors (http://mirrors.virginmedia.com/) )

A linux distribution CD is perfect for testing or just one of the larger files, preferably over 100Mbytes (one of the ISO files in say - ftp://mirrors.virginmedia.com/sites/opensuse.org/opensuse/distribution/12.1/iso/ )

Obviously stopwatch the download and then divide the filesize by the number of seconds to get the actual throughput. Try this procedure at various times of the day in case there is some peak-time differences.

If your getting low speed then you do have a problem so persist with VM support- ask to be put through to their network problem specialists. It may not be a signal problem but some kind of routing mis-configuration. If its confirmed as a problem then make sure you get a ticket number so you can claim compensation.

nb, you MUST perform the timing procedure via a wired connection (not wireless) and on a pc that has had the TCPIP buffer tweak done (using a program called TCPOptimizer).

I hope you got a ticket number. If you did then you can phone up and request compensation for the poor service. Usually, with utilisation type problems that are known to be causing problems they can be persuaded to charge for a lower tier service (without actually switching you too the lower tier) until the problem is sorted.

Also note that utilisation is usually highly time dependant. Try scheduling your usage so you aren't online at peak times (usually 5pm-9pm).
