Totally illegal for good reasons!!
Most people who do this (illegally) use a 13Amp plugtop on each end of a extension lead so a standard plug goes into the generator (like anything would) but the other end is also a plug that is plugged into an ordinary socket - seems like a great idea until you touch the very live sticky out pins - probably why they are called 'widowmakers'.
Also if the power is off in your house and you connect generator to house (safely somehow - not a widowmaker!) then the poor guy from Manweb in a wet ditch WILL die when your house current lights him up like a Xmas tree, because he knows the power is off, and no-one is stupid enough to back feed a house as it might kill someone other than the householder...

backfeeding is not a good idea as the above method is illegal, but if you plug into the genny and have a socket outlet on the other end then no problem

you have to install a transfer switch to isolate the genny from the mains and prevent workers being fried

true,i think im getting confused
im simply referring to using a genny for power and not actually hooking it up to a consumer unit (backfeeding)

rumor says if you have a MASSIVE MASSIVE monster genny, if you ever start it, 'BY LAW'? you are required to call the electric co and upload to the grid!

Unless this is a left over law from WWII??

why pv systems feed into the grid in a similar fashion
