DreamUp connection Problem

I'm a total newbie to this scene, but am V keen to learn.
Anyhow, I'm having the most basic of problems..
Can't seem to connect to my DM 500s. - My computer doesn't have a series port, so I got a USB to Serial adapter of ebay.
Downloaded Universal DreamUp V1.3.3.9 and opened it up, plugged in the USB adapter and nothing happens.
Under the Progress heading, The Status says, 'Connection Prepared, now switch on the dreambox! Plugged power lead , Green light comes on, but nothing happens
It doesn't matter which way round I complete the above, it wont connect.
I have tried to connect to my laptop and get the same result.
Im hoping it's something simple, That I've over looked..

The USB adapter, didn't come with any software _ just thought I add that .

Can anyone help get me started .please.

Just tried version DreamUp 132 (2007)
and still no joy.

Are you selecting the correct com port in the drop down box?

And DreamUP Version 1.2.5 .
Check com port, but it doesn't register

In Your device manager, the com port is visible correctly? I think You need some drv for the USB adapter...

@Satsearching... in the dropdown menu it only has COM1.
TheAdapter didn't come with any software.
Plus when I use DreamUp on my laptop the dropdown says COM1 & COM2, the laptop only has 2 usb outs, and switching between these and tne COM1 & 2 doesn't make any differance. Plus in device manager (for the laptop) it says communication port is No.2.

I'm wondering is there something wrong with the Dream Box? For example, I can't get the box to go into standby - red light (but it will do thjs when connected to to TV).
When I first got it and pluged it in , it would move the motorized dish - but no channels - its on Nabilosat at the moment -
That's as far as I got in the inital set up - (getting the dish up) it's been collecting dust since then.
But now when I plug the lot together it says searching for...... The green light comes on at the Motor - but the dish doesn't move any more.
I don't know why this is, but I was hoping that after flashing the unit ( I have to anyway to get it working) that this would also sort the dish movement.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm rambling _ but I really don't know what I'm talking about !!
Hopefully I can flash this unit and start to learn some more..

in devise manager check in port properties settings advance the comport
plus its best if you use network aswell.

Have you intalled the drivers required to support the usb to serial adapter?

Ok, first attemps the drivers wouldn't load, so bought a lead that didn't need S/w. Didn't work. Tried original again, but loaded the S/W by looking for it - as apposed by wizard. It loaded..
But I was also looking at COM prts in Device manager, when should have been looking at serial ports - which would only register when the USB lead was plugged in.
I'm expalining this, just incase someone else has the same problem and - Like me - is a bit thick when it comes to this subject..

Any how, have now managed to flash the Box !!
Now need to do some more reading to figure out what next..

GO TO MY COMUTER CHECK THE COM PORT ASSIGNED TO YOUR USB TO SERIAL ADAPTER UNDER COM PORTS AND THEN RUN DREAMUP AND SELECT COM PORT ASSIGNED TO YOUR USB TO SERIAL ADAPTER THAT SHOULD WORK

These usb to comport devices are not the full shilling, you are best with a proper comport.

For my home box, I bought a pci com adapter card, always works here with whatever I throw at it.
