Guys you'll need to load the drivers for the USB cable and then follow this to set it up http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f34/how-change-com-port-settings-using-usb-serial-adapter-1926/

I had a problem like this too, the way I dealt with it was to go into device manager on your computer and change the com number manually from there. Just go to the com in dev mngr and select properties and then go to advanced and manually change the com number. Hope this will help you.

Bought a USB to RS232 lead from eBay for a couple of quid. Installed the drivers that came with the item, and then changed the COM port from 'COM 4' to 'COM 3', and voila - everything worked just fine!

Thanks to the OP and all those that assisted!
