clk 200 auto problem

Hi all,

Got a 98 clk200 auto. Problem is that when D or 3,2,1 is selected the box appears to go into 1st gear but it wont change upwards into 2nd, 3rd 4th. It will go into N / R / Park fine.
Autoboss scanner isn't coming up with any fault codes. I've removed gearbox ecu to look for signs of oil/water on connectors etc. but it's all clean & dry. If gearbox ecu was faulty I would expext a fault code? Anyone come across this problem before or have any ideas pls?
