Hi guys. I've been having used car dealers bringing in used GM cars with bad radios such as the cd. They bring in another used radio from the same year but it won't turn on because the new GM cars check the VIN# before turning the radio on. The dealer can do it but it's a lot of $$$. I believe it's called the 29 bit system on the newer GM cars and trucks where no accessory wire is on the factory plug.

Is there any way for an independent shop to address this issue? I have several programmers such as Xprog and UPA. I'm mostly on the locksmith airbag section.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I really don't know the make other than it's from GM. There's several radios from GM that are doing this. I wouldn't doubt that maybe all GM factory radios are setup like that. At least in the US.

This is one of them...
GM CHEVY CD DVD RADIO SUBURBAN SIERRA YUKON TAHOE SILVERADO 07 08 09 15923583 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-CHEVY-CD-DVD-RADIO-SUBURBAN-SIERRA-YUKON-TAHOE-SILVERADO-07-08-09-15923583-/320835847542?hash=item4ab34e8576&item=320835847542&pt=Car_Audio_Video&vxp=mtr)

Only the dealer can reprogram it to work in the new car.

Not only the dealer can program this radios. Remove the mainboard and you will find a 24c64, read it and post the dump...

Actually i did this before, its usually for Radios named RDS models in chevy. As told read the eeprom and in it you see the VIN (part not all 17 digits) of the radio and then edit it to what you want and thats all.
