Is it just vm customers that are having intermittent problems especially with usenet servers. I'm currently getting and average 80kb download speed using vm newsgroup, it is a bit better to us server on newsdemon and all this reported as being from a fibre optic line that has been cut through in holland somewhere. Wouldn't mind hearing if anybody else is having trouble and if they are but didn't know why this might explain it.

If a cable is cut in Holland, and that is where the data centre is, then it would explain why you are getting lower speeds. I would try another host if possible.
