DHCP on Network Setup ?????

Hi guys
Please can someone tell what's the right way on the " NETWORK SETUP" ..... DHCP : ON or DHCP: OFF .....?

off as this alows you to set your ip address correctly. don't forget to save settings with the green button. if you leave dhcp on every time you reboot your dm it will change the ip address to a new one so you then have problems connecting to dm at ip address (error dmb not found !).

To some extent, it may depend on your router.

Most routers will remember device MAC addresses for a considerable period (often weeks since last connection) and allocate IP addresses from the pool accordingly, thus the device will normally be allocated the same IP on successive requests.

Routers can also mostly be set to force a particular MAC address to be always allocated a particular IP address. If you have such a router its often better to allow the router to do the assignment so your device will need to be in DHCP mode. If your device has a built in server then this is often the best setup as you can also port-forward to correct ports within the router at the same time as you set the MAC-IP routing. This means most of the setup is done in the one device !

If you have an older router, then you may need to set a static IP within the device (ie DHCP OFF). If this is the case you may still require to set port-forwarding within the router. This is a slightly more complex arrangement as now you require to set the options within both the router and the device. You also need to make sure you pick a static IP that is outside the normal IP pool range but is still within the subnet or you may end up with multiple devices being allocated to the same IP.

if you have one of them virgin routers your best bet is to always reset it via the pin and hit dhcp on and it usually gets the ip address and works

I always set it to on never connects when switched off for me
