You can re-sync the key to the car.

spikey,

problem!
options-
if early infra red key second hand key may!, be able to re burn code into old chip.beware, some keys wont re burn!

code has to come from france (4days).be dealer coded & burnt.

the alarm, central locking & imo are all combined & encripted through ecu.

there are people who will bypass ecu to get u mobile.

cheap option is bite the b & go to dealer, b me.
much same for later radio key, but more complex.

prob is 3 systems r interlinked.

sorry, hope this helps.(u cant re synk without chip)
carl13. (sorry for lazzzy text speak)

Ahh you lost the actual chip, I thought you meant you opened the key to change batteries or something. You must have the second model of the immobiliser. I have a 96 megane coupe and have re-synched the key to open the car and disable immobiliser. I think in 1997 Renault started using a new system.
