my m8 was arrested yesterday for a minor offence(section 5) taken to Police station, as he was being booked in, he requested to be seen by a doctor or paramedic & also requested to make a phone call.
Both was refused by the sergent,who said, "its up to me when you can make a phone call & it up to me to decide if you need to be seen by a doctor" & both were dened to him.

Is this legal?

Your right is to have somebody informed of your wherabouts rather than to get a phonecall. You dont actually have a right to personally use a phone.

Whilst in custody, the custody officer has a duty of care which includes getting medical assistance if required. A custody officer would have to have a very good reason to deny medical attention as the could be effectively held personally liable for any negative consequences.
