Windows 7 to xp lan

Hi All , please advise me on the best way to connect two pcs , one with win 7 and the other with xp .I purchased a cross over lan cable , watched a few you tube movies on setting up ip addresses but not seeing any shared files .Please I know this forum is for adults but I really need a point to point instruction here pls help , thanks , regards

By pinging each ip address I am now sure that the network is working , maybe the way I have set up file sharing is wrong ???

Problem solved , had to learn about permissions and sharing between the two different os's basically solved the problem by creating a folder , sharing the folder then drag and drop everything I want into that folder
