Any one got advice on whats the best thing to do when wanting to be able to use mobile internet in the US?

Mainly gps and map apps.

O2 said on my payandgo it would be ?6 p/mb so fck that.

Phone is unlocked, so would the best option be to buy a prepaid sim card over there ?

Any recommendations ?

You have a couple of options.

1. Buy a SIM from Wallmart. Check on their website for prices.

2. Major hotels sell SIM cards. Again, check the pricing.

3. Wallmart sell 'disposable' phones from $10 preloaded with minutes. Cheapest web browsing phone $20, slightly better phones from $30.

It would appear that network coverage & pricing varies depending on the area you will be visiting. But Verizon & Sprint are not well known for good deals on prepay.
Some networks offer $1 per day tariffs, but I don't know if that includes data

this (http://www.usasims.com/ATT_SIM.html)is the one I was looking at but as a company they seem to get mixed reviews.

Doesn't look to bad.

If you're more interested in the data side I would stay away from the Unlimited $2 a day. Better off with the Simple Plan.

Data charges are pretty much inline with prepay over here in the UK.

Was going to get that card and load it with $50 then I have 250m calling and 1gb data.

Should be fine.

Just need to get them to reply to a email.
