View Full Version : Air con not very cold

Devilfish

I was out and about today and had the air con turned to about 18 degrees. I have it on 24/7 but it's usually about 22 degrees. Last year I remember it was ice cold but today it wasn't even cold, actually it was warm lol.

Any ideas what I could do? I've heard you can take it to a garage and have it 'topped up' but don't want charged an arm and a leg for the pleasure.

Thanks

The strangest thing...was out in the car tonight...about 30 seconds after I started it up freezin ice cold air came out. No idea why...must have just needed a restart!

I read this and ran out to test mine, but mine is dead :(

Oh well, ?25 isn't too expensive for a nice chilly breeze while everyone else is baking alive in their cars :)

when you turn on your air con (engine must be running) you should hear a clunk this is the air con compressor engaging you should even be able to see it working if you point a tourch at the fan belt pulleys and turn on and off the switch you will see a pully stop and start turning .if this does not happen then the gas pressure is probably low which will drop over time or you could have a leak.the only way to check for a leak is getting it regased and tested

I did used to hear a clunk mate, but it's stopped.

I'll order that refill kit and see how it goes.

Had my Zafira regassed at kwik fit was fine for a few months then stopped working again. Guess I got a leak somewhere. Really need to take it somewhere that wont jsut regas it but will test it for leaks aswell. Think theres a place in Paisley that can do it.

Thanks

1 - check cooling fan, when you switch ac on, it must run

2 - if fan is running, you have to check ac pressure in servis

helps? :)

Don't go to the Halfords "Professionals" , i booked an appointment were a guy sold me a bacteriacide/cleaner for ?12.99 , told me to take it home and it would probably do the job ,it made the car smell nice.
I went back and parted with ?40 for a refill aerosol with inspection gauge , on the agreement he refunded me the ?12.99 for the last can .
Halfords state their "professionals" will recharge your car on the carpark for free , i lifted the bonnet , and the spotty face lads mouth dropped open , he said , " you fill it over here by the washer bottle i think" (2001 mondeo).
He didn't realise , the drivers side road wheel and arch splash guards need removing , to access the high /low pressure connections .
I checked the system using the gauge on the can and both level and valve operating pressures were fine !
I returned the can to Halfords unopened , for a refund and they could help no more !.
Prior to all this , i'd had the compressor and it's clutch operation checked and found ok .
In the absence of a decent/reputable local aircon specialist , i was that fed up with it i sold the car !

If there's anyone still awake at the end of this post , Well Done !

I could have bought one of these myself bigfella , but you can't top up a system thats already full , unless you just wanna waste ?20 !
Your system must be leaking if you've gotta bang refill cans into it and if you don't drain a system down prior to refilling , it won't work properly anyway.
Halfords is ok if you want a gallon of oil or a pushbike !
