Sick of not having a box for your UPA?
Got an "A" in art and craft back at school?
Then enter The great $3.75 UPA box contest!

Box must be regulation size (73mm wide, 98mm long, 26mm deep) and transparent to show off your handiwork (or lack of).

Notice the inbuilt adapters?
Notice the poorly cut holes to access the jumpers?
Notice the sticky tape covering said holes to keep the dirt out?
Notice the sticky tape holding it together?
Notice the crooked Dynamo labels?
Build time = about 6 hours (hard to believe I know)

COME ON IT CAN'T BE HARD TO BEAT THIS PIECE OF SHIT!

Winner gets a photo of me in my special edition DK undies.

Thanks go out to Cocutanu for finding these boxes.

That's cool, but would like to NOT take part in this thread because:-

The other day, i left my China Made GENUINE CSI825++ hotair station cooling down, with my "Dental Tweesers" off ebay ?5 on top, with my QUAILTY USB-UPA China Clone next to it.

I came back a few mins later to find the PC saying "UPA HAS TAKEN TOO MUCH CURRANT" - looked down to see the tweesers resting on the USB - plug.

Unplugged it, plugged back in - nothing - plugged into the rear usb ports - PLING PONG - works fine.

All my friends down the pub (both of them) were well pleased with is adventure.

Fallen, what's the second prize? I think I might prefer it to the first prize. There is honestly nothing wrong with your box. Now go mad and make a Mk2. Just a few suggestions which will bring the price up to about $6. Move the UPA to the end of the box with cut outs for the 12vollt and USB sockets to poke through. At the 9 pin dsub end, desolder the 9 pin plug and replace with a length of 9 way ribbon connector coming to a 9 pin plug (remember not to throw the original plug away) on the end of the box. Where you have the cut outs for the jumpers, replace the jumpers with 3 miniature toggle switches, 1 each of spst, spdt dpdt and drill holes for the switches, these could be placed towards the 9 pin end of the box, so as not to get in the way of the UPA. I personally would use 9 pin plugs instead of the dil sockets but that could put the price up even more, say another 50 cents to $1. Also if you are working the plastic by hand I think you would find it more manageable to use a black ABS box. Clear boxes are very brittle compared to ABS but of course you wouldn't qualify to win your undies with an opaque box. Well done, Arthur.

Hi Fallen, I'd take part the contest.

My box size 65Wx115Lx23D mm, got them from the local supplier. Not that good to have such product in the photo but I think it's good for the size reference.

A relay circuit is to take over the power jumper. Don't think very much about the Vpp and the 3.3v jumper yet coz I fell not to use them but one of my box has a hole to reach a miniature switch which replaced the 5v/3.3v jumper.

agree, just counn't think of what their called.

Often though about putting that really SHITE eeprom programmer i have ina box, with a usb-hub - memory stick with the software and some memory dumps.

The idea being, if something happens and you have to steal a new computer, plug in, theres the software and a collection of IN-corrected dumps, ready to go.

The kind of thing a fireman or RNLI worker could use, or even a train driver called Justy22 for example.

*IF* ever did get round to putting USB-UPA in a box, will deffo NOT be trasparent, and would have SHIT loads of blue and white, LEDS and a small battery, 555 and a 4017 decade counter. to run the LEDS, so both my mates in the pub would think it's cool.

As your in Austrailla Fallen, perhaps you could have another go, with one of these, but stick price labels on every LED, so you can decide how much to charge the costomer

A relay with delayed change-over circuit (diode+capacitor). This's to replace the USB/ext. supply selection jumper. A delayed change-over circuit is to eliminate an unpresent symptom when removing the ext. power supply plug.

Besides that, this upa I used an old aluminium case from a crappy CAS3 programer, a couple of toggle switches & other odds and ends. Its pictured next to my blue CAS3 programer so you can get an idea of size.

Didn't have to buy anything in particular to do this (apart from 6 frosties :cheers:and a healthy dose of brandy).
Start to finish took around 5 hours. Printed the "cover" on a hp laserjet with Photoshop.

Done.

BigJ, looks good well done. The big problem though is not the cost of parts. That is negligible, it's the time, thought and effort that goes into making the box and fitting it all together. Personally I value my time whatever I am doing at the same price, be it developing or working for a customer. With this in mind, it makes a one off box or say a programming cable etc. quite expensive but unfortunately that is always the case. Arthur.

Agree with u on most of that but look at it this way: My upa paid for itself with its first job and continues to be a cash machine, so its in my interests to "protect" it so to speak.

BigJ, Like you my UPA was paid for not with the first job but in the first 2 hours of receiving it. With the work I do, it is still my first choice. I have done 3 airbag ecu's and a Volvo XC90 this morning using it. I could actually buy a new one every week and still be in big profit.

Dane-Elec, my UPA is not in a box but it is fitted on a PVC base and directly and permanently connected to my in-circuit gizmo which is also fitted to the base. (not advertising by the way as it is solely for my own use). Arthur.
