I had to replace my Peugeot gearbox and was recomended a second had gearbox by the garage due to the age of the car and they quoted approx ?170-00 which is about right i believe.
I did a search and sourced one from one of those internet breaker / parts search and one came in at ?125.00, so i thought i would go for that to save money.
It took a while for the gearbox to arrive but eventually it did and the mechanic put it in and when testing the gearbox they noticed that the bearings was gone on the gearbox.
After a discussion with the breakers they agreed to relace the gearbox once they spoke to the mechanic to clarify the fault.
I had to pay for the first part of the labour for the full amount that it cost, but i will also have to pay to put the replacement gearbox in and luckly his is doing me a favour regarding the cost.
Now my question is it the responsibility of the breakers to cover the additional cost of labour for given me a faulty gearbox which they swear that they bench tested, (My mechanic recons that they just stripped it out of a car as there is no sign of the gearbox being tested ?), or do i stand no chance and learn by my mistake.

The thing is i used to work in one many years ago when a wee teenager which i forgot all about, then it was yank out what part people wanted watching out for the rats etc in the yard and blag the sell, i would off thought it would be more regulated nowadays.
That brought back memories forgotten...

Ha ha this is usual. Did it have good written on it in white or yellow pen. :D
I've had a similar issue with an engine from a breakers. Ended up breaking 2 engines and making an ok one the put all the sh1t together and took it back to the breaker for a refund also gave them an ear full as I had to replace the engine twice. What goes round comes around the engine I took back must of gone in the skip as it now had bent valves a melted piston an knocking crank

bought cheap....got cheap!
used is always a gamble!
copy new parts can be the same......cheap costs you in the end.
parts suppliers only have to cover the part replacement, all else is the responsibility of the installer when it leaves them.
'Bench tested a gearbox'......mmm.....it goes in and out of gear?......quality test!!

I hear what you are saying but it was not worth the money to by a new part due to the age of the car as stated by my mechanic, and i understand about the responsibility of the installer, but i was thinking due to it was the parts supplier supplying me with a faulty part and making my mechanic have to do the same job twice that there may be a responsibility of the supplier to cover that cost or part of it, but it sounds like that will be a no.
Just thought i may be worth a try......

I thought that and it felt that he was trying to b@!!$h!t me, with the fact when the part did not arrive on time and i contacted them about it, they threw me a line that their machine broke that they need to take out the gearbox ? and they borrowed another machine and they have taken the gearbox out now, and it is sitting on the pallet ready for delivery, and that in a way was my first worry which in turn is turning into a troublesome issue, oh well you live and you learn.
Lets hope the replacement is ok.
