Hi
Oldford is Spot-On HPi means High Pressure-Petrol-Injection..........
And HDi means High Pressure-Diesel-Injection................
There for your vehicle has a High Pressure Fuel Pump which is driven by Cam Shaft if you look on the right side of the engine on cylinder head you will see it.........
You will see its fitted with two pipes one from the tank and other going to the fuel rail........
[/URL]
And those pumps are common faults the diaphragms in side do brake and cause low pressure faults..........see the attached picture of pump..........
But, this fault code also has other meaning as
P1291 Injector High Side Short To GND Or, V Battery - Bank 1.............
So it would be nice if you diagnose it again using any other Tool and see what other fault codes you getting.......
Have a look in here for your fault code................

There's even a recall on this engine.
PEUGEOT 406 EW10D HPI Recall - Fuel may leak (http://www.warrantyguide.co.uk/vehicle-recall-E1B5D11B61C6D8238025756D004BA7B2-peugeot-406-ew10d-hpi-recall)
Ash, the description about the injector is for most engines, but not the EW10D, which is the HPI one.
