Hi

I've had my Raspberry Pi for a couple of months and getting used to it, does anybody know of any sites that have software written for the Pi, I am not yet at the stage were I can write my own stuff but if I could download some Pre-written it would give me some ideas.

The possibilities of the raspberry PI is endless, well not quite.

It would be awesome if there was a open source site dedicated for R PI software.

I am using one for home automation. Setup as a web server so that I can operate devices in my house from my phone

You can boot multiple systems on it using Berryboot , but think most just install
Openelec (xbmc) on it , for free movies and stuff

I still haven't found a real life use for one tbh. I set mine up as a temporary webserver, didn't last long not enough oomph to run fascgi. I don't need a media server, my surround sound does that, as does my DM. Hopefully one day I'll find a use for it.

What software are you after ?

Pretty much all PI software is open source. Install the standard linux development tools on your pi (gcc etc) and you can build and run large amounts of packages from the standard linux repositories. The only real exceptions are programs that require specific hardware or resources the pi doesn't have.

Its even easy enough to download the linux kernel code and build your own specialist kernel if thats what you want. There's also a version of Quake that runs quite nicely on the pi., as well as a number of other games.

The later images allow for overclocking (mine runs at 850Mhz as standard instead of 700Mhz but higher is possible if you add a small heatsink to the processor). If you run the pi headless (ie no fancy gui - only the 'remote' ssh command line) and overclock it then it works quite well as a webserver. Equivelent to maybe a 550Mhz pentium.

Replace apache with one of the newer lightweight webservers and it will likely run even faster - most of them have fastcgi or equivelent.

Aye I tried that, using lighthhpd, with php5 etc, even left the mysql daemon running on another server, it still couldn't cope so I gave up. It's more likely that I'll just use it as an ssh server eventually rather than for anything useful. Don't get me wrong as a test computer it's not a major problem, just that I don't see any 'real' uses for it at the end of the day. Maybe when the next generation comes out, which I'm sure it will, they may be of use. As it is it's underpowered and under resourced for anything more useful than playing around with.

Put xmbc on (raspbmc) and install the navi-x plugin, makes an ideal tiny media center. Ive got an old microsoft media center remote plugged into mine and it all works out the box.

I run mine headless, with a gui (Raspbian) and TightVNC and use it as a Torent client and also as a home network printer server. It never gets shut down.
If I can figure out how to get Windows Vista to see it as well as my Linux laptop and desktop, I would be very happy.

Problem is, and I know it's to keep price down so can't complain, they have no disk controller and they don't have enough RAM to make anything useful other than as media centres and even then they have no hardware acceleration for video. Could build a NAS from one, but then again I already have a NAS (which has all the usual media features and P2P etc), and as above with no disk controller it has to be USB disks which are slow. Mine has been confined to it's cig packet for a few months now, but I'll keep looking for projects.
