Xprog m has no on board adaptor for hc08.

The connection diagram should work. I have always used that and it always worked.
Check the levels at the pins. Do you read in circuit or a desoldered mcu?
If mcu is desoldered then don't forget the resonator and the 22p capacitors and a 10Mohm resistor in parallel with the resonator.

I had similar problems trying to read an MC68HC908AS60, all the job was done lifting the pins PTA0 and IRQ from the board. You can test the voltage in IRQ pin, if the voltage is lowest than 9v then you can't read or write the mcu. With this MCU UPA-USB is better because UPA have a connections tester and shows the value in each pin.

Remember to put clock at 16 mhz or dont work.

You can rread on-board.IRQ and RST must be lifted.I think pta0 too must lift.Check oscillator frequency.

ETL 908 programmer is best for this mcu.

what is the best programmer for this chip????

For this Mcu Upa-usb is better (my own experience), upa shows the number of errors and have a voltimeter and Test connection functions.

XPROG original has no problems.

Like ELSERVIS say before ! ETL 908 with zif support is the best tool ! decode security bit on these MCU....
Reading , Writing and verify like a charm !
