Tethering means using your phones internet access on another device.

Most mid to high end phones allow tethering (except the iphone which will need jailbreaking first).
This will allow you to turn your phone into a wifi router which can them be accessed from any wifi enabled device.

With Android, the option is hidden in the Settings > More menu (4.0 and above). I can't remember which menu has tethering in on Gingerbread devices.

It's been a while since I've used Symbian, but I know they had USB tethering some years ago. So, I'd expect Nokia to be offering wifi tethering now.

Phones running Windows 7.5 (Mango) or above can tether using wifi.
