Hi Guys,

My son has a 250gb slimline & when he went to update it the other day it failed. Still turned on but no pic or audio. tried holding the reset button to no avail.
Is it the hard drive that's failed? & are they easy to replace?

Thanks in advance

This is a tutorial on how to fix a semi bricked console. If your console is semi bricked, it will start up green light, controller sync, but no video or audio, then it shuts off after 30 seconds. Here is how to fix it.

1. Enter recovery mode (while ps3 is in standby, hold the power button down until it shuts down again, then release. Hold it down again until you hear 2 consecutive beeps)

2. Connect controller with usb

3. Get a usb stick and create the folder "PS3" (in caps no quotes) on the root of the flash drive and inside of that make a new folder and name it "UPDATE" (in caps no quotes).

4. Download the firmware that you want to be on or already are on and put it in the folder named UPDATE we made in step 3. The PS3 firmware should be named PS3UPDAT.PUP and be around 170 mb. If it is not named that, name it that (in full caps). If it is not that size or close to it (give or take 10 mb) then you have downloaded the wrong file.

5. Plug the usb flash drive into your ps3 while it is still on the recovery menu and the select System Update (the last choice)

6. Press Start and Select at the same time and it will say "Checking... Pease wait."

7. Now go make some cookies or something and wait for about 15 minutes or longer because it takes A LONG TIME! It can take up to an hour for it to "check". Be patient.

8. Check on it every 3-5 minutes. It may say that you need to reformat the ps3 hdd. Do so. After it will be "checking" again. Continue making cookies, watching tv or whatever you were doing while you waited the first time because it will be A LONG TIME again. Be patient.

9. Finally, it will prompt you to go through the updating process. Go through it as normal and let it update. After it is done you should have a working ps3!

10. If you get an error, post it in the comments and I will help you with it.

NOTE: If the PS3 makes 2 beeps but no video, unplug the video cable and plug it back in. This should fix it.

2nd NOTE: You cannot update without the correct blu ray logic board. To update without it, you must be using special firmware.

Good luck!

Have you tried restoring it to default settings. Its number 5 when you enter safe mode.Had a similar problem with ps3 freezing and this resolved it.You will lose any pics vids downloads etc you have stored on there.Any games you have downloaded can be restored in the ps3 shop.Just make sure you write down the log in details for online id (email address, password).

Hi Colly. Thanks for the reply all sorted now. Had to take it for repair only cost me 30 notes, which is better than forking out for a new PS3.

Apparently when it was downloading the update, with it being via wifi & slower it somehow corrupted the hard drive. Have had to have the hard drive partitioned & the latest update installed via USB.

From now on i'll do his updates through ethernet.

Thanks for everyone's advice & thoughts, Greatly appreciated.

Cheers
