Sony CDX M9900 decode?

after reading a few posts on here i am even more confused than ever regarding the method to decode this unit?

its been sat in the garage for years now, so i thought i would have yet another go at getting this working.

i have the remote with it, please could someone explain the process to decode this unit?

i have found a device online that appears to decode sony units simply by IR, is this the only way to do this model?

every post that comes up throught the search always says the same, no code in 24c02 etc, and all mention the remote trick. but this does nothing for me despite dozens of attempts?

am i missing something?
