Last night we had a bad storm lightning struck an oak tree
about 50ft. from the dish this left me with no signal at all.
I had a spare box that is known to be good when I switched it out there was still no signal.
How can I check the line and the LNB? The box outputs
voltage? I have a DVOM I just do not know what to check for. The cable from the dish to the receivers is quite long to
do a continuity check as I am used to doing it on cars, around here I hang out in the garage.
Can the LNB be checked? Wifey carped on about the internet last night got a new modem and router but all will not be quiet until the TV is back on. It's Directv if it matters.

go to local screwfix, ?20 for a sat finder, check that way

or if a good sat box, got sat finder option? and see if a signal on 28.2

with a coax cable, just test the cable with both ends open circuit to ensure there is no short, then short circuit one end and test with the avo that you get a resistance reading that disappears when you remove the short circuit again

chances are its the lnb, but you could try testing your equipment elsewhere on a known to be working feed, at a neighbours house for instance

once you have narrowed it down in this manner, the failure is with what is left. I would say that you cannot test the lnb itself unless you used a short piece of cable and moved the sat box with a tv near to the lnb itself, so testing using a short feed at the lnb end of the installation

if the box is good, and the cable is also good, then it must be the lnb at fault

note to the last poster, he said directv (usa) , not sly (uk)
