The Xbox 360 is modded by replacing the firmware on the DVD drive. The available methods depend on which drive you have. If your 360 is less than 6 months old, it will most likely have a Lite-On drive.

Check out the tutorial in the link to see what is involved. It is not a difficult process, but it does require a bit of reading before you attempt it.

Liteon DG-16D2S Firmware Update Tutorial (http://team-xecuter.com/ck3/liteon_windows.htm)

The above method requires the Connectivity Kit V3. You also need the probe if you do not wish to solder the points on the drive. I purchased my Connectivity Kit from here: Xecuter Connectivity Kit v3 Pro - Xbox 360 - Connectivity Kits - (http://www.kanection.co.uk/product.php/1100/0/xecuter-connectivity-kit-v3-pro/ae816bbc1d70d4f6ba34fa8ade3e2ab6)

The ixtreme firmware allows you to play backups on your Xbox.

With the latest ixtreme firmware and properly 'stealthed' backups, you should be safe on Xbox Live. There is always a small risk, though. Nothing is 100% safe.

If/when you decide to mod your Xbox, just be sure to check all your backups in Abgx before burning to disc. This will help keep you safe from the banhammer on Xbox Live.

What about Xbox live updates? Can you still accept them and it won't overwrite the hacked firmware?

Yes, you will be fine accepting Live updates. They do not change the firmware. Also, MS cannot detect the firmware, they can only detect bad backups. The only thing you need to worry about is ensuring that all backups are properly stealthed.

I remember over a year ago reading through many of your post on DW which helped me to get my surfboard up and running on UPC. :)

Info was very scarce back then.

Still going strong to this day.

See your on the Magnet 50MB now.

Anyways im in dublin and have been flashing 360s for over 3 years, so let me know if you need a hand or i can even do it for you.

Regs.

Cheers Wozzo, its a brand new Elite, but from what I can tell it looks like its got a BENQ drive on it.

I'm going to have a read through the docs to see if I can do it myself, but it looks like I will need some specialist equipment to get the drive key?

Cool

Well BenQ and lite-on trays are the same so if you compared the trays then it may be either.

So you want to compare the drive wires as shown in this pic.

To do a BenQ you only need a Sata chipset and a sata cable.

With the lite-on you need either a connectivity kit or a home made Max 232 kit.

Heres the best tut

Is a sata chipset hardware or software?

Sata chipset is HARDWARE. I have a via vt6421 pci chipset and connects all 360 drives
