Hi, its exact same as vu duo really, but the front LCD screen is big and the picons look nice on it, also i recommend the duo remote over the ultimo remote,
why you need usb when you can get another tuner and make it three tuners

Is the duo a good machine then aswell? would i just purchase the remote seperately?
just to get it a bit cheaper tbh

the vu+duo is much like my xtrend 9000, you only need 2 tuners, unless you want to put up a sky dish, with 2 tuners you can still watch 1 and be recording 2 others.
another thing to bear in mind is if your going to do lots of recordings, especially HD and 3D your HDD will fill up in no time , so consider getting a big HDD , and a 2.5" one will give off less heat than the 3.5" one, as too much heat can slow down your Receiver and put strain on the box over a period of time.
have a look at the following boxes and decide which one suits you .
Amiko Alien 8900 HD, i can get you a good deal but it comes from Denmark

VU+ Duo, has all the support you need in terms of images , software e.t.c
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff308/aftermath_0377/VUDuo_Screen-228x228.jpg add an extra ?100 for the triple tuner one
Amiko Alien2 HD Triple tuner:

or there is the xtrend ( clark tech HD boxes )

on the vu+ boxes do they come with an optical audio output for my surround sound as i noticed the above dont. is there another way to get the surround sound through?
aftermath, when you say with twin tuner i can record two and watch one, do you mean i can record 2 and watch a different channel? or record two and watch one that im recording?

you can record from two different transponders and watch a third but only if it's on the same quadrant as one of the two recordings, ie High / Low / Horizontal / Vertical.

With duo2 to come around in a couple of months at the latest, not worth investing in an ultimo now unless absolutely neccesary. the duo2 might be pricey when it finally arrives, but it will surely push the price of the ultimo down a bit and probably the original duo too.
Once all these new high spec new receivers come out and the driver issues sorted, it would be sensible to make a judgement then based on price and performance.
Price wise, gigablue quad is likely to give you the best performance v price. that is assuming they sort out their teething problems.

wont the duo 2 only support 2 tuners? as im after the 3 tuner one.
i am looking to invest in good product so i dont mind paying the price, i dont really wanna buy a box thats a bit cheaper but has problems. dont mind a few problems as thats expected but id rather have an expensive box for a few years rather than change box every year or so.
Plus isnt the duo and ultimo a different model? so if they bring the duo 2 out they wont be updating the ultimo to a newer model yet?

The manufacturers of the vu+ receivers have hinted and promised new pluggable tu ers that are "TWIN" meaning two tuners in one. They were rumored to be due Q3 this year. But will probably arrive soon after the duo2 is released
It will allow a solo box to have two tuners in one, and ultimo double tuners in its pluggable slots.
worth getting a new receiver with more than 3 times processing power if your in for the long haul. New receivers will have 1.3ghz processor as opposed to old ultimo with 400mhz. Ultimo may be redundent line soon as most will go for duo2 especially if it lives up to expectations

The solo2 will have fixed tuners, so won't be able to use twin plug and play tuner modules.
It has also been hinted that the duo2 will only take one twin tuner module, making it a triple tuner.
Why this is and how true it is, I don't know. But it'll make an awesome triple tuner

looks like i should wait then. im pressuming the price range will be around the same as the triple tuner at the moment

all prices for duo2 are speculation at this moment. in my mind it will be around 599 euros. those receivers already on the market will fall in price with demand for the duo2 likely to be high even with a hefty price tag.
multi tuner options you will have are
1. duo2 - most expensive but likely to have good support
2. gigablue quad - already released and will have option of 4 tuner slots, with dvb-s2 plugable tuners available in q1/q2 of 2013. support is likely to improve - but they need to solve quite a few major issues. by the time duo2 is released they should be some progress from gigablue team in providing fixes for the issues they currently have. currently retailing at ?320-?339
3. ultimo - much lower spec but will give you good performance and plenty of support. price is likely to drop further once demand for duo2 arrives. plenty will be selling second hand too. i suspect this will drop below ?300 eventually.

looking at vu+ website. the spec for the solo2 says it has 1 twin tuner module built in. if that means one fixed twin tuner module i don't think it will be that bad. only limitation is against those who like to change from dvb-s2 to Terrestrial or Cable tuners.

I have an utltimo with two tuners off 1 dish pointing at 28.2 . would it be possible to have another dish pointing to another location running on a third tuner ?

You could do that, but to make most of the multiple tuners, use multi-lnb (quads) on the dish in conjunction with disenq switch.

I cannot have a motorised dish as I have two boxes and need my daughters on 28.2 at all times . I was thinking about fitting another dish for mainly 3pm saturday kick offs.

no need for motorised dish. just need LNBs with more than one feed. sky usually supply dish's with quad - for sky multiroom.
just have two dishes and a disenq switch.
i have a similar setup with what you are requesting.
i have two fixed dishes.
one sky minidish with quad LNB pointing obviously to 28e and a larger 90cm dish with two quad LNBs - one for 13e and one for 16e.
I then run these feeds into disenq switches. At the other end. have two cables that give me access to 3 dishes (13e, 16e and 28e) and two more cables that give me access to 28e only.
It is possible to have all 3 sats on one 90cm dish, but it's a bit fiddly to setup and signal strength suffers.

They released a driver update yesterday that fixed those issues.
Gigablue QUAD drivers 25.10.2012
-. fixed scrambled channel problem with multi transponder.(PIP and Recording)
-. fixed video scaler sharpness.
-. fixed tuner configuration mode "loopthrouth to".

that sounds great. i might even get one, but will wait to see what the duo2 brings in terms of price and performance before making a final decision.

Yes it does come with 2 tuners on the Duo2 but they are Plug & Play which means when the Dual tuner is released the Duo2 will become a Quad tuner if you want or as you ask a triple.

I would imagine when the Duo2 becomes available, they did sate a date at the end of Q3 but thats been and gone and i have learnt through waiting for the Ultimo that to takes VU's word on release dates with a pinch of salt.

Just buy something cheap and cheerful for now and hang fire for the newer models both of which with the advertised specs will make the Ultimo look like a base model
