RS232 Cables/Adapters

Sorry if this question has already been asked but can anyone recommend a decent RS232 cable/adapter. My laptop doesn't have a 9 pin serial port so need a USB to serial adapter. I've bought two off ebay and both were useless. One didn't work at all, the other would only display what appeared on the screen but wouldn't allow me to type. Anyway, I don't want to waste more money so was wondering if anyone can recomend something. Ta
