View Full Version : Vu+ Duo Powers Off

I just set up a new vu+ duo clone this evening. Fitted 1tb seagate sata hard drive, set up safe vix 2.4 155 image that always use.

Box running perfect, no problems.

I just stumbled accross this problem when I was reaching around the back of the tv. I applied very slight pressure with my hand to top of box and it just turned off. Tried powering back on and all i got was a red dot on the display.

I left it a minute then tried powering up and box is fine.

Now I have investigated a little further and it seems that any pressure just above hdmi port will power off the box.

Have removed top case just to have a look but cannot see anything out of the ordinary. Granted Im not sure what to be looking for..

Anybody noticed a similar problem with duo clones, box is going fine but obviously this small problem that could have went unnoticed could turn it to a bigger problem..

It's only a problem if you think its going to be a problem, look at it this way how many times do you actually touch the top of the box when its installed in its permanent place, Not very many if any at all.

True, I could easily put up with this myself. But this box is for my dads workmate so its not so easy to tell him, good box, just dont move it...lol

I've been told that adding an internal drive inside a clone causes the.PSU to overheat...could be the reason...or its shortening out somewhere...what version clone do you have...I've removed my drive and gonna get a enclosure for it..

Isn't this like the joke - Dr it hurts when I do this - reply being well don't do that.

On a serious note I might take the lid off mine and have a look.

First time adding a high capacity hard drive. I put in a seagate 1tb drive, wonder if its maybe to high for the machine.

I never moved the box today and it just powered off itself today through the football..

Will remove the drive and see if it makes a difference.

But yes, you are right, the box is shorting out...

Fan is dead. I have solved this issue by removing the hard drive.

Where do I go from here, fit a smaller hard drive...??

Was always quite straight forward fitting a hard drive, whats different this time..?

Anybody know what I should do. No problem with the fan. Removing the hard drive cured the problem.

But I want an internal hdd.....:bounce:

On your 1TB drive is it one of the green eco's 5400rpm that uses less power than a standard pc drive, this may help but i would also consider a 2.5" 5400rpm green eco variant as well

I actually removed the drive from this external seagate. I had a 1tb external drive for storing all my files but seen a western digital 2tb external for ?58 so snapped that up.

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB - (STAC1000200) NEW!!! 7636490021947 | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seagate-FreeAgent-GoFlex-1TB-STAC1000200-NEW-/300803829188?pt=UK_Computing_HardDrives_RL&hash=item46094e2dc4)

I formatted the 1tb seagate drive as fat32 and removed it from the enclosure and put it in the vu+ duo. The drive is a baracuda 7200

It was installed in the duo correctly and mounted, initiliased all perfectly. Recording, epg, everything was working as it should.

But as I said before the box would power off with any pressure near the hdmi port, sometimes it would just power off stationary.

I have no smaller hard drive to try but will order one. Bit annoyed now as I have no real use for the 1tb drive now since I have a 2tb...

Also is there a telnet command I can send to the box to turn off permanent timeshift, keep getting a message it cannot be activated and to turn it off in the menu setup, the hard drive needs to be installed...maybe a little flash drive should do the trick...

which image is the permanent timeshift on, i know on blackhole its a plugin as they do not incorporate it into the image so can be uninstalled through the plugin menus, If its Vix or one of the other OpenPLI variants i think a lot of them incorporate it into the image itself.

Not sure i get that quote as the OP is asking about turning off permanent timeshift which has no relevance to his duo being a clone or original.

Its a clone running vix. Not a big deal anyway, main concern is getting a hard drive thats not shorting the box.

Will try a smaller size 5400 drive and report back....

Rather than a 3.5" drive is go with a laptop drive tis what I have installed and works with no probs. Biggest prob may be size as laptop drives only come up to max of 1tb

Thats it, 2.5 inch drives are quite a bit dearer than 3.5 drives. I will try a 320gb 3.5 hdd to see what that does...

Woah, didn't even know that you could get a 2tb laptop HDD. Only have a 250gb laptop drive in mine at the mo, might upgrade that to a 500gb as the kids keep on recording loads of crap and then never watching or deleting it.

Have tried a Western Digital 500GB Caviar green power drive but its still shorting the box.

I bought this drive as it uses less power and is also a favourite choice in many PVR boxes.

Any ideas what I can try now....

Ive had a couple of duo clones and had a few problems with all of them and they were caused by the PSU. This happened to one box and was easily fixed
If the box is working then make sure the connector to the mobo is TIGHT
There seems to be 2 positions for the connector, a loose one and a tight one (You should be able to lift the box up by the connector cable if it is connected properly)
I only use laptop hard disks due to power requirements, 31/2 ins disks need more power from PSU which is a weak point in the clones - you may be lucky and get away with running a 3 1/2 in disk but they don't seem to last

How do you put a 2.5 inch drive in, the bracket that comes with the box is only suitable for 3.5

Probably the easiest and neatest solution is to cable tie it to the holder or drill some more holes in the bracket

I made a paper template and drilled 4 holes in the bracket but 2 is enough.

Ok, well I have removed hard drive from box, reflashed image, put hard drive back in and now the box is fine.

Ive tried putting pressure all round the box, moving it up and down and its perfect.

Started 5 recordings and still ok..

That was the 500gb drive, wonder if I'd have any bother with the 1tb drive.

Wont be trying it anyway, its working thats the main thing..
