Hi Dk, I have a 2008 KW with an ISX CM871 with a 2733 CPL. I have current Insite and Incal. The problem I have when I flash a new calibration (yes same CPL) I get a 285 J1939 multiplex fault code. Is there a solution or fix, or is it a Cummins Safeguard against outside calibration? Thanks to all. If this has been posted elsewhere point me to it as I have searched literally hours of forum.

Use J1708 for connection and calibration for this ECM. Yes it does have J1939 communication's but used for ABS mostly. Not for Calibrations.

Interesting, try to connect to ecm through J1708 (which is universal language for serial connection) the only response is the ecm is it cannot connect. I am using an inline 5 adapter with XP, serial port, with insite 7.5.0234. Any ideas? Am I missing 1708 drivers or what? Auto configure only comes up with a 1939 connection. Thanks to all.

You need to create a new connection in manual mode. For INLINE 5 driver is installed automatically when you install version 7.5.0

On what vehicle this engine is set? From where there was a problem? Normally such errors arise in case of failure of electrowiring 1939 or failure in other blok of control.
Sorry my bad english.

CM871 connected only by J1939 for diagnostic and for calibration, J1708 not supported.

I re-calibrated a CM871 last week with the inline 5 using a J1708 communication link on an ISM with a CM871 ECM. The data link can be set for USB or RS232 Com. 1. The manual in insite program files, recommends RS232 hard wire for re-calibrations not USB. It takes longer but is safer than having J1939 errors from packet collisions. This ecm used only ABS and some dash gauges, Speedometer, oil and engine temp for J1939. I use the insite books included with insite quite often due to so many ECM's have different approaches on communications. When in doubt check the recommend settings in the manuals. I might be wrong for the ISX?

Be careful with Insite 7.5 and Calibrations. If you are not using a genuine Cummins License, one of the resent upgrades will not allow you to re-calibrate the ECM any longer. DK member The Cell posted this glitch a few weeks ago in one of the threads. I personally stayed with version 7.4. It seems to be more stable and reliable in XP than 7.5.

As far as the manual connection, that is what I am using. The problem lies with the dpf switch. Disable the switch, code goes away. But it only runs for about a minute. Then it throws a 1117 code intermittent power loss to ecm. Is it a possible bad calibration or ground problem?

With calibration in this case everything is all right. In case of switching on of DPF there is a supply voltage reduction on additional modules of control. INSITE fixes an error 285 J1939 multiplex fault code, further 1117. For failure elimination it is necessary for you to find leakage of tension. Probably bad contact of thin wires on accumulator plants.

That's what I have figured out. Found out truck had mysterious other symptoms like lights and wipers going at any time with no driver input. Thanks to all. Must've been a freak coincidence with my calibrating the ecm.
