Maybe to avoid hit and run.

The forum isn't a download centre for folk to take and never give!

If we didn't ask for 5 posts then that's what would happen. Hopefully in those 5 posts people can see what a friendly place the forum is and they will return and be a part of the community without wanting.

Well as you say he's probably gone, but why is the post count so low, you can get them in no time get your download and gone till next time.
If it was made a little higher pehaps more would stay and see what available and stay, worth thinking about.

the post requirement generally does work
i mod in a different site (non hardware and distinctly 'nautical') and having a post count requirement really does save us from unwanted hit and run types, also you never know just what someone will post so it also leads to some interesting/amusing topics.

tbh 5 posts is very little - we would ask for a minimum of 20 before access to the downloads section and other sites ask for way more than that again.

Or they could spam a forum which is barely looked at by mods to get the posts and download before getting banned... Idea mmm lol
