Does anybody know if an abt tuned edc16u31 ecu can be flashed over obd to make it original again?
If not, then it probably needs to be flashed by bdm, but will I need an ori flash file and also an original mpc file?

What file did you flash?
If it is an old tune from ABT then you have to restore it by BDM.

my problem is not getting the car to start again, but making the ecu original again, so the car can be flashed over obd again. I have all bdm files form the same ecu but then original, but cannot get it to work with the ori files. Tried just the flash, flash + MPC, but no luck. I am wondering now if the bdm ori file I got is fine!

you must flash all = new eeprom + mpc + flash !!!

ABT always creates problems, it had been good if you had taken a ful bdm backup before you do anything! I don't think that you will be able restore that ECU...

yes only thing that you can do is brick the ecu
let it like it is abt is warranty by vag why to change it if you not want abt why to buy it then ?

It's not very difficult to restore the ecu, but you need a BDM programmer.
ABT used CMD BDM programmer in the early years and the RSA was disabled, tha't is why you can't flash it over OBD anymore.
If you have read the ABT file over OBD then with a BDM programmer you can make it work again.

copy paste the obd data area over the bdm abt read and you have a original file

No.
Only solution is:
Read EEPROM by BDM (or programmer).
Write full BDM backup from same ori ECU (one file with MPC, Flash, Eeprom).
(Because ABT changed something in MPC).
Finally restore original Eeprom.
I tried it succesfully by myself.
