Please advise me if CAT and Perkins communication adapter are similar or identical in function. And will each work on both engines?

Thanks in advance...

They are exactly the same. Only the label is different. Tested and all was ok.

You set the preference in either Cat ET or Perkins EST to the com adapter you have, and it will connect to the engine
