Also try istreamnet or itheatres in cydia.

Most internet sites use streaming that needs plugin or flash not available yet on iPhone or iPad.
But there are applications that allow watching TV and direct sport depending on your service provider options. I use the French Orange and can see directly the football matches.
I have not seen many UK or US providers offering these options, they show mostly recorded videos.

Xbmc with the navi-x plug in will let you watch live footie on any idevice streamed via wifi or 3G.
