Iv been having some fun expanding my Asus WL500W & WL500GPv2 routers into very handy Linux servers, thease models both have USB ports on them, and opensource linux with released source code, theres some easey to follow tutorials on Olegs forum If your into hacking hardware and have a little linux knolage

U basicly update the firmware to a telneted virsion mount your USB drive, and install your apps, ie... bittorrent downloader, mp3 streamer, NAS, Webserver, full axess to the power of linux on wireless router, great fun if u like that kind of thing

and can pick one up the WL500GPV2 for under 40 quid maybe this post shoud be in the bargin bucket section :)

You should start by reading about DD-WRT or Tomato. With that you can do anything if you have a compatible router.

you can find info about this os at OpenWrt (http://www.openwrt.org)
I have used it and it's verry stabile and well made.
If you want to enjoy it with more cpu, ram and with 2-3 wifi cards you can get a routerboard like rb433ah from RouterBOARD (http://www.routerboard.com/)

Enjoy it !

Unfortunately with WL-500W you can not run Linux Kernel 2.6 and get WIFI at the same time. And you really need 2.6 because of the updated USB support, particularly if you are planning to run a USB Audio device.
