A friend as asked me to have a look at one of these phones.

hes said he wants it unlocking to GIFGAFF can this be done he wants to save a few bob

its on vodaphone now.

how can this be done?

do i need leads/software etc if so how do we do this

Telephone Vodaphone and ask them to unlock it. Safest and easiest way to do it. Provider unlock stays good always :) Then just throw a gifgaff sim in. Voda will give him the info.
