Hi all,

My signal strength on my dm800hdse using a 80 cm technomate dish on a run of about 30 metres of WF100 is -

(satfinder menu results) -
SNR 98 %
AGC 16%
BER 0

On Sky 1 hd -
SNR 14.76 dB

Sky living -
SNR 12.87 dB

are these okay ??

Do I need to alter anything ??

Look forward to your views.

Thanks

Hi. I think if you are getting nothing then you will need to alter something. Try the following ideas:
1) Is cable connected properly from receiver to LNB?

2) Is LNB working - if possible try with spare LNB.

3) Has dish moved due to recent strong winds?? You may need to re-align dish.

4) If you get most of the channels and not others then try a rescan to see if your TP's are out of date.

If it was working before then i dont think its your 17 trees (unless they have grown recently but very unlikely in this weather).

Good luck.

Hi philly,
I'm not on the site very often but like to help sat user's if possible. Check out the list that Nutsandbolts suggested, and if nothing is any better then try this.

Remove the last 3" of satellite cable that connectes to the LNB. Slide a rubber boot down the co-ax first...re-connect...lubricate the F plug slightly with KY...then slide the boot over the connector This prevents rain or moisture from entering the connector...a common fault with badly fitted "in a rush" normal Sky dishes...or any dishes if you don't know it.

Cheers, Wise Owl.

Hi again,

I am getting a good picture but was asking if the signal results could be improved.

Thanks

They look fine mate if you want to peak it then you should be looking at a TP on Eutelsat 28a something like this 11222 H 27500 2/3 which holds CBS action its the weakest out of the 4 birds in the 28.2? east slot so the higher the reading you get on that will do the job.

Hi Phillyf,

You've touched on a delicate subject mate, as signal strengths vary so much due to so many factors. The one important thing is NOT to have any obstruction in the dish's "line of sight". I'm referring mainly to motorised dish set-ups...but it still stands for fixed dishes. Branches in the winter and leaves on those branches in the summer, will affect your quality of signals received...in fact most STB's wont "lock in" to a signal below 50%. Rain, snow, high moisture clouds can all have an effect on the microwave signal...and if it's a weak signal your tv picture reception will lock up, or pixelate....sometimes quite loudly....but NOT dangerous.

Try adjusting the LNB in it's holder...to focus towards the dish, check it on your STB signal meter...then try it again back and, forwards. Be patient and it may be worth it.

Another thing to try is the LNB itself....remember, if you buy a cheap one it's 'odds on' you'll only get what you pay for. Look in the price range of ?50 and you wont go far wrong.

Alway's, as Nutsandbolts suggested, tweak your system on a weak signal.

I hope you can find something useful in that info as I've been involved with analogue and satellite for thirty years now. I ain't no "newbie" at it.

Cheers....Wise Owl

Things have changed in 30 years wise owl and thats the price of a good LNB the Black Ultra which is highly rated now only costs around a tenner, the days of polarisers and analogue LNBs are long gone we now live in a throw away society.

Hi. WiseOwl reading your post brought back memories of ww hen i had my first satellite system back in 1984. It was a 1.8 motorized dish with a Redifussion SRN50 receiver( i think). Cost me over 1500 pounds just to watch a few channels from a few satellites. People today dont know how lucky they are with todays equipment etc.
Take care.

agc seems low

I typically get these on 28e and I too am in the nw

SNR - 75%
AGC - 99%
BER - 0

you dont seem to have any quality lock

Ramjet,

its most likely the Tuner drivers on the 800se mine was the same when i had it, Same with my Solo2 it reads as 31% AGC on every satellite i am on now due to the driver updates, The SNR is the main thing which looks ok.

Yeah, that's quite right....I beat out a dustbin lid and experimented with an old BSB "squarial" arm and LNB to get all the channels I could. That was before R.M. swallowed up BSB to Sky. Do you remember D2Mac and that encoding...plus pulling signals in SECA in only black and white. But, as always, the kids today think they know it all...but fair do's to them, as they learn so quickly.

Wise Owl ...do i remember D2MAC?? of course i do . Use to watch loads of movies, adults and sports from Scandinavia and France using D2mac cards. If i remember correctly i think the D2mac systm was the first satellite encryption system to be hacked. The black and white signals you mentioned was to do with french channels like CANAL Plus, TF1, CINE CINEMAS etc. They were using D2mac encryption and SECAM video. This meant that on UK tv's (which were using PAL) the pictures would show as black and white. I had to buy a SECAM-PAL converter to view french channels in colour. Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories for me.

Regards.

No one remember the Satpac Video scrambling system used by Filmnet in the late 1980's i had one of those decoders as well as the videocrypt stacked on top all plugged into an amstrad SRX200 LOL

yes m8, my dad had the fimnet box, a two view box , sr200 with separate krypt box connected together, and also the 400 and 510 boxes. also the old bsb boxes (ferguson ?) that were converted to d2mac when b s b collapsed

there is no doubt it was more complicated back then, with less channels and many hurdles to overcome, phoning up ppl for "c*des" etc too

as for signal strength and quality strengths, in my experience its pointless comparing them as each box has its own parameters
