why are my file transfers so slow

i have an iomega 2tb nas drive on a gigabit network
and i acess it from my wireless laptop i am moving 3gb file to another folder on the same drive and it is moving it at 1.67mb/a second this is so slow

Makes no odds that. Its internal network speeds, not internet.

You will get slow speeds on wireless, lots of factors.

Try wired just to test speed and let me know

The reason I asked is because virgin 'super' hubs are famous for being pathetic over wireless, speaking from experience. Was asking for speed test result to see if there is a considerable difference in the speed he should be getting vs what he's actually getting over wireless. Also it's possible the laptop may not have wireless n which may also be a factor in the poor speed, again speaking from experience.

Right, however, if its an 'home network' issue a speed test wont make dingly gangly odds. All its doing is testing the op internet connection and not internal speeds.

Again. Drop wireless and go wired and report back.

As for laptop not having wireless it would still have a 10/100mbps ethernet port but speeds the op is getting is more consistant with wireless speeds over an internal network

ok i wired my laptop dell e5510 4gb ram i5 cpu straight into router and copied a 500mb file to my desktop speed varied from 1.6 to 1.78 mb/s and took 6 mins then i copied the file back 2.57 mb/s
this is painfully slow im on virgin 60mb all cat5e and a 10/100/1000

i'd use cat6e cable for 1.

I was getting about 20mbps from the hub when i used it as a switch.

Ended upgrading router, as stated they are rubbish

Definitely try to go with the new router...

Or you might have some issues in your current setup...

You never mentioned what modem you currently using...


Also on the other hand is the iomega formatted in NTFS and did you try to defragment the drive especially since you are transferring huge files...
If the file is greatly defragmented it might influence the speed greatly...

When copying files even from the same networked drive, the data first get downloaded to your pc and then goes back up to the new location.. Check if your NAS supports SSH? if so you could do your file moving within the NAS locally by connecting to it over SSH and it would bypass the whole router/laptop atleast till you get a new router..

To make sure it's actually the super hub thats slowing you, connect the NAS directly to your laptop with a cross over cable and see.. It could be that the NAS is faulty or that's the fastest it can do.. Hope this helps :)

Sorry for hijack this thread...
I have just bought a second NAS (Sinology DS415play), in order to "replace" my other one, which was set on RAID 0, (zyxel NSA221), I am now transferring all the data from one to another, about 3.5 TB.
My problem is, that on big files, I get about 10 MB/s, which on a 1Gbit network it should be more... but on folders with small files, like photos, is really slow.
I am copying a 88 Gb folder with photos, is now copying for 24 hrs, and is only at 21 Gb...
Am I missing something here?

P.S. - The router is a Linksys WRT1900ACS
