To set a static ip address in the DSL2680:

http://192.168.1.1
admin/admin
Advanced/OK
Setup (top menu)
LAN Setup (LH menu)
configure the details you require in "DHCP Table"
ie. choose an ip address, enter MAC address of device in the form A1:B2:C3:d4:E5:F6, select "Manual Config" and "Static"
Save settings
Switch off/on to acquire its new ip address

it's a good idea to adjust the "DHCP IP Address Range" and choose your static ip outside of this
ie. range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.99, then assign statics starting from 192.168.1.100
this will avoid any conflicts addresses assigned auto

tbh I think its the Ip addy his isp give that he wants static, if your isp don't do static then your addy will keep changing, one way round this is use a service to take your ip and link it with a fixed address for example Free Dynamic DNS | No-IP (http://freedns.no-ip.com/)
