i've read somewhere that you can brick your box by using a cheap usb flash drive. what about some of these with encryption on? and does the sv4 recognise all capacities or is there a limit? Anyone got any experiences good or bad?

be surprised if the usb caused any bricks its the software that will "almost" always be the reason for the brick. all usb sticks are cheap as chips. as you say some sellers are giving away a free usb and that will probably be the cheapest on the market.
the "brick" threat must surely only arise if the flash was bad or usb was sh.it and froze causing a dud installation.
not sure if its changed but previously read it had only been tested to a 300gb usb/hd capacity.
