Ericsson achieves broadband speeds of 500Mbps

Ericsson has revealed the development of new technology that could help improve the delivery of superfast broadband to homes across the UK.

The company achieved broadband speeds of more than 500Mbps over a copper wire broadband network using the latest VDSL2-based technology.

While the data cannot be transferred over longer distances, it is being touted as a possible "last mile" option, providing the final access link between fibre-optic networks and homes without losing out on speeds.

Chief technical officer of Ericsson Hakan Eriksson said the breakthrough confirms the company's commitment to developing broadband access technology and improving connectivity.

"It also proves Ericsson's abilities to provide future mobile backhauling, which will enable the quick and cost-effective introduction of Long-Term Evolution solutions," he added.

Mr Eriksson claimed that the technology will allow consumers to make the most of new broadband services such as video-on-demand and HDTV, as well as accelerating the future rollout of high-speed mobile internet connections.

The company was this week chosen by Vodafone to "provide maintenance and operations" for its 2G and 3G radio networks in the UK.

As part of a seven-year agreement, Ericsson will seek to improve the quality and cost structure of the networks and will also transfer around 350 employees to Vodafone.

Chief technology officer at Vodafone UK Jeni Mundy said: "Ericsson is the specialist in this area and will be critical in helping maintain our high quality network - which customers expect from Vodafone."

She added that the partnership would provide "real operational and financial benefits" for the company, allowing it to increase investment in new products and services for customers.
