View Full Version : Using Skybox/Dreambox on OLD sky satelite?

I've been reading into a lot on this topic in general and decided to buy a Skybox f5 to possibly CS
I'm currently on virgin cable, and I believe that it is not possible to use these boxes on cable?
However I used to be on Sky, so would it be possible to still use the satellite for CS channels?
Any help on this would be great!
Cheers.

You will get more respose in the Openbox/Skybox forum, but yes, you can use the box on your old S l y dish setup (as long as it's not so old that it still points to 19.2e). And no, you cannot use Skyboxes on a cable connection.
btw...talk of C S is not allowed on Digital Kaos.

Sorry, I wasn't aware.
How will I know which way my satellite is facing? How old it would it have to be not to work?
Cheers.

When you say that you used to be with S l y, was that digital or analogue? I think the 28.2e position for digital started around 15 years ago, so any dishes installed after that should be ok.
The reason I was concerned about the age of your dish, was because you emphasized the word OLD in the title.

One simple non technical way of telling the dish is correctly facing 28.2e is to look at your neighbours dishes :) are they all facing the same direction? I reckon it'll be fine mate as long as the lnb on the dish isn't buggered or the weather / something hasn't damaged the cable over the years

borrow a digital sly box that is currently getting bbc1 and itv, connect it to the dish and see if the free to air channels like bbc1 work
if they do the dish is pointing in the right direction ! simples. any DVB sly box can be used for this so as suggested anything made in the last 12 years or so

You could use Satellite Finder / Dish Alignment Calculator with Google Maps | DishPointer.com (http://www.dishpointer.com/), type your postcode in, select dish you want to check and you should see which way it would be pointing for 28.2e/19.2e.
I used it to work out roughly where I'd need to put a dish and was pretty good.

Cheers. seems to look alright. Only worry now is hoping the people who fitted my new cable didn't cut the satellite cables.
Just have to wait and see. I could always attach other cables to the satellite though couldn't I? (get someone to)

Can you see the LNB on the dish? If so, just follow the cables to see where they enter your house. I don't see why the cable company should have touched the dish cables.

Yeah. I suppose they would, if they wanted to use the same hole & they couldn't fit the cable leads in as well.
