Protecting your broadband 'with some simple steps'

There are a number of simple steps to consider when attempting to make your wired or mobile broadband connection extra secure, one expert has advised this week.

According to a spokesman for Kaspersky Lab, an international provider of internet and PC threat prevention and management solutions, the technological decisions one needs to make when setting up a home connection can be made easily and safely.

David Emms, senior technology consultant at the company, said the common steps users need to take in reducing the level of risk, comes down to good, reliable software and basic common sense.

He said once the right protective programs are installed, consumers need to make sure they are exercising good practice online that does not put them in a vulnerable position.
"Don't use the same password for Facebook and MySpace and your bank and eBay and all these things because potentially if someone gets the key for one door they could open every other door," Mr Emms explained.

He added updating software patches was also essential as security threats are continually evolving, meaning a new PC or laptop requires maintenance and should not be treated like a "finished item" when it is purchased.

A recent episode of BBC technology show Click highlighted the weaknesses associated with some online software systems by hijacking 22,000 computers with a botnet. The hack was later disabled after a number of test emails made it through to users inboxes as part of the experiment.
