Broadband users urged 'switch off for Earth Hour'

Broadband users are being asked to switch off their connection, laptop or PC for just one hour as part of a global event aimed at raising awareness of climate change.

In conjunction with Earth Hour, which takes place on Saturday March 28th at 20:30 GMT in the UK, IT recycling and data cleansing specialist Remploy E-cycle has urged as many people as possible to take part.

The company states that as well as switching off their lights and electrical appliances for the 60-minute period, people should consider turning off their home computing systems - which could include any broadband devices - such as wireless routers or modems.

Malcolm Watson, general manager of the company, said leaving electrical items such as TVs, DVD players or audio systems was one thing, but as computer equipment is one of the greatest drains on power in the home it was important for users to recognise their responsibility.

"The average PC is estimated to use around 20 watts per hour even with the screen saver on," he added. "Remploy E-cycle is urging all PC owners to consider the environmental impact of their appliances this Earth Hour, not just their lights."

A number of other businesses have this week announced their support of the World Wildlife Federation's (WWF) Earth Hour event, including Tesco, Coca-Cola, Lend Lease, Unilever, IKEA, BT and McDonald's.

WWF UK head of business and industry, Dax Lovegrove, commented the private sector is an important part of any
attempts to tackle climate change and their support is a good sign that more firms are recognising this.
